Trainer = Opportunity

Today I was scheduled for an hour long ride on my trainer. When I got home from work today I was starting to talk myself into saying that I could use just one more recovery day from last week (Sunday was a planned recovery day, and well Saturday just turned into one with everything going on). I was still feeling a bit fatigued from the weekend and was trying to justify not riding because I was "listening to my body". Then it hit me, trainer = opportunity.

Anyone who lives in a cold weather climate that bikes, whether they are a pro or amateur will admit that riding on the trainer can be hard. You are blowing through the wind all summer on your bike, seeing new scenery every few miles, wind in your face, getting a nice tan, etc. When your on the trainer you are riding in the same spot, seeing the same scenery, the wind is provided my the fan set upon your body, but at least you don't have those summer tan lines right? Riding on the trainer is tough mentally and sometimes the hardest part is just to get on that damn thing. Today while I was weighing my options it popped into my head that some competitors tonight will take a night off the bike, some will find an excuse not to ride. This provides me with an opportunity to gain strength on them. Every workout that I do on my bike through the winter that I plan, better prepares me for my training in the summer and ultimately gives me a higher percentage of executing the perfect race day at Ironman on September 12th.

So from here on out for the rest of the winter (only 62 days until spring!) when I am struggling to get onto the bike, I will just think about which of my competitors are giving into temptation and that I may just be able to get some strength on them and better myself for race day!

Just remember one thing....

"Someday my body won't let me do this, today is NOT that day"

I personally like the trainer, I agree 100% its mentally tough to do. I have tried everything under the sun to make it better. But the miles we put in during the winter will make us ahead of the game come spring.

I don't mind mine either. Throw a TV up in front of your trainer and throw on the TdF DVD's and you are golden for a while.
